Kyle Chen wins in Perth

During this busy Weekend of boxing, one young talented amateur boxer from New Zealand fought in Perth, Australia.

Taiwan born New Zealander Kyle Chen at the age of 16, fought a 21 year old Michael Martino. Chen who has over 9 amateur titles and has fought in 44 amateur bouts so far including the Junior World Championship in 2015.

As surprising this bout was as, this probably should not have happened in the first place due to the age gap between Chen and Martino. However Chen won the bout by Points Decision. Chen has stated that his opponent was a stronger boxer but wasn’t a heavy hitter.

This was a good test for Chen before he goes off to the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas this year in July. Chen was chosen earlier this month to be part of the New Zealand Team and is to be one of the favourites to win a Medal.

Chen is hoping to go to the youth Olympics next year in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but first the Commonwealth youth games and of course New Zealand Nationals.
