Kyle Chen

Rising Star in the Boxing Ring

Kyle Chen, also known by his birth name Ting Chen, is making waves in the amateur boxing scene both domestically and internationally. Born on 20 December 2000 in Taipei, Taiwan, Chen has become a formidable force in the sport, representing our nation with pride and skill.

Early Beginnings

Chen’s journey into boxing began in an unconventional manner. Initially a rugby player for his high school, he decided to give boxing a go in 2013. His potential was immediately evident when he defeated Bocky Blackburn by TKO in his first amateur bout. This early success motivated Chen to focus entirely on amateur boxing, a decision that would prove fruitful in the years to come.

Rapid Rise in the Amateur Ranks

Cadet Years

Chen’s ascent in the boxing world was swift and impressive. In 2013, he won the Central North Island Boxing Championships, showcasing his talent early on. The following year, Chen claimed his first amateur title at the 2014 Golden Gloves, competing as a novice despite having only five bouts under his belt. He defeated the more experienced Xavier Hirini in a split decision, a victory that hinted at his future potential.

Junior Division Success

Moving into the junior division in 2014, Chen continued to dominate. He clinched the national title and represented the country at the Junior World Boxing Championship in Russia, reaching the top 16. This international exposure was made possible through community support, with his father Murray Potts utilising the “Give a Little” website to raise funds for Chen’s trip.

Chen’s success wasn’t limited to our shores. Leveraging his dual citizenship, he competed in and won the Taiwan National championships in 2015, adding an international gold medal to his growing collection.

Youth Division and International Recognition

In 2017, Chen transitioned to the youth division, marking a new chapter in his boxing career. He participated in an AIBA-sponsored training camp, preparing for the 2018 Youth Olympics. This year proved to be pivotal for Chen, as he showcased his skills on various international platforms.

One of Chen’s most notable achievements came at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games. Despite fighting with a flu-like infection, he secured victories against Australian and Welsh opponents. Although he narrowly missed out on the gold, Chen’s performance earned him a bronze medal, further cementing his reputation on the international stage.

A Promising Future

At just 16 years old, Chen has already amassed an impressive record of 38 wins and 6 defeats in the amateur ranks. His achievements include:

  • Three-time national champion
  • Two-time Taiwan national champion
  • Two-time Golden Gloves champion
  • Winner of the 2016 Australian Golden Gloves open

Chen’s potential has not gone unnoticed. He has been accepted into the International Boxing Association’s road to Buenos Aires programme, preparing him for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

Unique Advantage

Chen’s dual citizenship of Taiwan and New Zealand provides him with unique opportunities to compete and gain experience in both countries. This exposure to different boxing styles and competitors has undoubtedly contributed to his rapid development and success in the sport.

Kyle Chen’s boxing journey is a testament to dedication, skill, and the support of the boxing community. From his early days as a rugby player to his current status as a rising star in amateur boxing, Chen has consistently demonstrated his potential to become a world-class athlete.

As he continues to develop and compete at higher levels, the boxing world will be watching closely. With his track record of success and his commitment to the sport, Kyle Chen is poised to become one of our nation’s most promising boxing talents, potentially following in the footsteps of other Kiwi boxing greats.
