Nichols Falls Track Leith Valley
Tucked away in the lush Leith Valley, just a stone’s throw from Dunedin’s city centre, lies the enchanting Nichols Falls Track. This relatively short but rewarding walk offers visitors a chance to experience a slice of native bush, cascading waterfalls, and even a magical glow worm dell, all within minutes of urban life.
Getting There
The track is surprisingly accessible, located only about 10 minutes’ drive from the heart of Dunedin. To reach the trailhead, head north along George Street, then turn left onto Duke Street. Continue as the road changes names to Malvern Street and finally Leith Valley Road. Keep an eye out for a small one-lane bridge; the car park is just beyond this on the right-hand side.
For those relying on public transport, the #3 bus will get you most of the way there. Hop off at the Fulton Rd, 385 stop, and it’s about a 1km walk to the trailhead.
The Track
The Nichols Falls Track offers a variety of experiences packed into a relatively short distance. The full loop is approximately 1.9km and typically takes about 40 minutes to complete, though you’ll want to allow extra time for enjoying the falls and exploring the glow worm dell.
As you set out from the car park, cross back over the bridge and look for the wooden sign pointing towards the glow worms and Nichols Falls. The track starts wide and gently inclined, but don’t be fooled – there are some steeper sections ahead.
About five minutes in, you’ll reach a fork in the path. Straight ahead leads to the glow worm dell and Nichols Creek (a quick 5-minute detour), while the left fork takes you up towards the falls.
The Climb to the Falls
The path to Nichols Falls becomes steeper and narrower as you ascend. It can be rocky and muddy in places, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. As you near the falls, the track narrows further, with some sections having eroded away. Keep a close eye on children in this area, as there are some steep drop-offs.
After about 15-20 minutes of climbing, you’ll round a corner and be rewarded with your first view of Nichols Falls. The main viewing area is set back a bit, but for the more adventurous, it’s possible to cross the creek and scramble over rocks to reach the base of the falls.
Nichols Falls
Nichols Falls itself is a classic horsetail waterfall, tumbling dramatically down moss-covered rocks. While it may not be the largest waterfall you’ll ever see, its setting in a lush, fern-filled gorge makes it a truly magical spot. The falls are particularly impressive after heavy rain, when the water volume increases significantly.
For the best experience, carefully make your way to the base of the falls. Here, you can feel the raw power of the water and the cool mist on your face. The sheer stone walls and verdant plant life create an enchanting, almost prehistoric atmosphere.
Glow Worm Dell
On your return journey, be sure to take the short detour to the glow worm dell. During the day, this area is a picturesque spot with a gentle stream flowing between fern and moss-covered walls. But it’s after dark that this area truly comes alive, with hundreds of glow worms illuminating the dell like a starry night sky.
Flora and Fauna
The Nichols Falls Track offers a fantastic opportunity to experience native bush right on Dunedin’s doorstep. Keep your eyes and ears open for native birds like tui and kereru (wood pigeons). The lush vegetation includes a variety of ferns, mosses, and native trees, providing a glimpse into what much of Aotearoa once looked like.
Tips for Your Visit
- Wear sturdy, preferably waterproof shoes. The track can get muddy and slippery, especially after rain.
- Bring a torch if you plan to visit the glow worm dell after dark.
- Allow plenty of time, especially if you’re planning to scramble to the base of the falls or visit the glow worms.
- Keep children under close supervision, particularly on the narrower sections of the track.
- Consider visiting after recent rainfall for the most impressive waterfall display.
